DIR EN GREY at Center Stage in Atlanta, GA - GHOUL TOUR 2013

It’s always great to start things off on the proper foot, and the opening act, DAGOBA, managed to do just that. With their primarily heavy, adrenaline-pumping, and fairly brutal songs, they had the crowd wanting more when they left the stage for the main performance.

DIR EN GREY is beyond a doubt a band that does not enjoy having to disappoint their fans. When they took position at Center Stage, the crowd was thunderous in the darkness of the venue. Even the band seemed to have a tough time containing their excitement, except at the start for Kyo, thanks in part to the ghoulish face makeup he was wearing.

It has certainly been awhile since DIR EN GREY has been in full visual kei attire, and while they’re no longer a part of that genre and have toned down their image from years prior, there are still clear elements of a visual aesthetic in their outfits. Die’s hair is also nearly how it was around the time of the BLITZ 5 DAYS performance. It was almost surreal when they opened with the newer version of Obscure, and from there, they did quite a bit of album bouncing between Vulgar, Uroboros, and Dum Spiro Spero, including singles The Final and Rinkaku. They’ve started playing their older material in new ways to keep it fresh, and to better express themselves in a musical way. There were some on-stage antics, although fairly scarce aside from Kyo’s seductive dancing, but enough to draw and beautifully express just how raw the emotions were between the band and the crowd.

The highest point of the concert for me, despite the entire show’s superb composition and performance all throughout, had to have been when the members came back out for the encore. They were all smiling as they took the stage again, even Kyo since his makeup was removed and you could properly see his facial expressions. After the last song of the night, Kyo gave several more smiles before heading out and letting the rest of the band have quite a bit of fun tossing picks, water, and even a few drum sticks into the crowd. It truly seems that DIR EN GREY is happy to be touring in the states again, and I’m certain that everyone in attendance would love to see them here again with how wild and constant the cheers were!
