HYBRIDS is one of several visual bands hailing from France. Despite only being around for a little over two years, this band has a good number of accomplishments; including performing with ANLI POLLICINO. Their most recent accomplishment is the release of their second studio CD, ILLUSION, and the release of an accompanying PV for its title track.

The ILLUSION single starts off with the title track. For the first few seconds of this song, it's pretty mild; and then the guitars are added to the mix leading to a sucker-punch of energy. This is actually the first time that I had the chance to hear the new vocalist's, Nao's, voice and it goes along with HYBRIDS’ music almost like it was destiny. One thing that helps emphasize Nao's vocals out, is the female voice that comes through in both the chorus and verses. Another interesting aspect is that the choruses are done in Japanese, while the verses are in English. Personally I'm a huge fan of this as it helps show the talent of the vocalist, and I must say I would truly like to hear Nao sing in French one day. Overall my favorite part of this song is the solo, which is around two and a half minutes into the song, while it only lasts 30 seconds, it's extraordinary. It's just got this spark of “umph” to it that really helps to power the song.

The next song on this CD is “Unlight”. In comparison to “ILLUSION”, this song is nitty, gritty, and simply fantastic. Where the previous song was energetic, this one is a heavy song that is almost impossible not to air guitar to. The high point to this song is also at two and a half minutes in, a small solo that's proceeded by a short growled line. The only downside to this song is at times Nao's voice almost blends into the instruments, to the point where the rest of the band is overpowering him. Despite that, it's a great song and a great forerunner to the final song, “Venom.”

“Venom” is sort of a combination of “ILLUSION” and “Unlight”. It's energetically gritty, causing this to be a song that won't leave your head for days - not that you'll be complaining. One of the features it shares with “ILLUSION”, is the female vocals which work in tandem with Nao's. Another key point in “Venom” are the screams/growls that are done sporadically throughout the song. It sound like they are done by all the members of the band, but I could be mistaken. Either way, it adds a new dimension to the song that I'm not sure if it would have otherwise. The solo in this song is a little bit more technical than the others, which I really like, but I personally wish it had been longer. While this song may be the shortest, it certainly leaves you feeling satisfied.

I really enjoyed listening to this CD, and I would recommend checking out the promotional video for ILLUSION, as the band is very entertaining to watch perform. Overall “ILLUSION” gets a 7.5/10 as well as the title of Visual KEIOS' International Artist of the Month for October. I look forward to the growth and future of this band, and hope to hear more music from them as soon as possible.
