August Feature: An Cafe~ Nyappy is Back~

Enter the world of Nyappy, a world created by the harajuku dance rock kings of Antic Cafe (a.k.a. An Cafe). They have returned from their hiatus that was announced just three years ago on August 1, 2009! An Cafe is an explosive, popish and danceable oshare kei band with the current line-up of Miku (vo.), Kanon (ba.), Teruki (dr.), Yu-ki (keyboards), and Takuya (g.).

The story of An Cafe started in May 2003 with Miku (vo.), Bou (g.) and Kanon (ba.) after the disbanding of Reverie, Miku's former band. Despite not having a drummer, they went ahead and released two demo tapes, Opu-ngu (June 2003) and Uzumaki senshokutai/Hatsukoi (July 2003) at early shows. In their early live shows, they experimented with live session drummers. This is how they met Teruki, who, at that point, was playing with Feathers-Blue. In August 2003, the trio was joined by Teruki who left his former band, Feathers-Blue to become a full member of An Café as the drummer.

In December 2003, it was announced that the band signed with an independent label, Loop Ash. Along with this, came the release of their first single “Candy Holic” the following March in 2004. The single reached number 2 on the Oricon Indie Charts within only a week. Then it became official, their world of cute images, upbeat songs and Nyappy along with their fanbase--the Cafekkos--changed the Japanese scene. In Candy Holic, Miku's distinctive voice playfully lifts this upbeat rock piece with electrifying guitar rhythms. In parts of the piece you can feel more of their danceable world especially with what feels like electronica fused rock one note moments that glitter the piece like at :47-:55. The most distinctive part of this song is when it sounds like Miku is speed talking while Bou and Kanon create a trance-like effect in the background at the same time at :24-:35 and 1:19-1:30. Overall, the song is a great introduction to what was yet to come.

In May 2004, the band performed at their first sold out one-man live, which made it an important concert for them, titled Happy Birthday Tsuyu, at Takadanobaba AREA. In subsequent months, the band remained busy touring throughout Japan, releasing four singles during this time (two of which were live only).

On February 23, 2005, An Café released their first mini-album called Amedama rock which also included Candy Holic, along with a compilation of previously released singles. A month after the release of their mini-album, they released a maxi single titled “Karakuri hitei”. That summer, An Cafe released back-to-back one-track singles “Tekesuta kousen”, “Escapism”, and “Merrymaking”, one for each month. These tracks were included in their first full-length album, Shikisai Moment, which was released in November 2005.

An Cafe danced their way to the top creating a world in which their fans could live in called Nyappy with their Cafekkos. Though as a band, An Café did more than just music. They modeled for various harajuku fashion brands such as Sex Pot Revenge and Angelic Pretty, even going so far as forming their own “language.” In a world of Miku’s creation where ‘nyappy’ means happy and hello, ‘tirimasu’ means have a good day. and ‘poppoo’ means peace and at other times it means kiss. Miku created this language to provide a way for them to connect to their fans, the Cafekkos, all around the world.

In 2006, the band continued to push forward as they released another album along with four singles. In 2007, major announcements and changes came upon the horizon for the harajuku dance kings. Their first major announcement was that An Café would make their U.S. and overseas debut at A-KON, an anime convention in Dallas, Texas. However, shortly thereafter, a sad announcement was made that Bou (g.) would leave the band and that April 30th would mark his last performance with the band.

Mid-May in 2007 brought another change in the world of Nyappy. Instead of simply replacing Bou’s spot in the band, they announced the addition of two band members :Yu-ki (keyboards) and Takuya (guitar). An Café became the first band experience for both Yu-ki, who had only played classical piano music before, and Takuya. “Kakusei Heroism ~THE HERO WITHOUT A 'NAME'~”, was the first release with Takuya and Yu-ki splashing their own bright colors in the mix.

“Kakusei Heroism” showcases the rock flare of this new line-up by highlighting each band member, Yu-ki and Takuya in particular. As a whole, this piece feels like it focuses more on the guitar and bass with fairly heavy drum beats in the background. Despite this, Miku's vocals flow smoothly throughout it. There are certain parts in the piece that, although heavily centered around the bass and guitar, you can clearly hear the keyboard fusing together with the drums during the choruses and especially at 3:01-3-12. During this section, Yu-ki's solo creates a ‘let’s all go out on the dance floor if we haven’t already’ vibe that continues as Teruki joins in at 3:07 which ignites a dance explosion. The highlight of this piece is the overall danceable feel that intensifies through the solos and smooths over as Miku sings. Overall, it was a great way to introduce the new additions to the line-up.

As Kakusei Heroism shows the rock flare of An Cafe, “Ryuusei Rocket” shows a playful side with bunny ears and more. Its playfulness explodes in this popish rock danceable song. There is a feeling of lightness in this piece that even when Takuya and Kanon are doing their solos at 2:23-2:45, or during the hard-hitting choruses, this feeling perseveres. Overall, this piece is very keyboard heavy, like an electronica, trance , and rock fusion, dance party mix. The PV for this song is full of fun characters, the band members are even wearing bunny ears at one point while sitting at a table making a cake. This scene, later in the pv, picks up after the band starts to throw cake batter at each other while wearing their bunny outfits. This just adds even more to the already playful and fun feel to the piece. It's definitely something that can make you want to dance.

The band's activities came to a halt on August 1, 2009 when An Café announced that they were suspending all band activities. This sent a wave of shock throughout the music scene and cafekkos around the world. On January 4, 2010, the band performed live together for the last time at the Nippon Budokan. However, the announcement clearly stated that this was not the end of An Café and that the band would be back together in the future.

This statement proved to be a reality when on April 1, 2012, An Café announced on their Official Home Page that they were back and would be resuming band activities in Summer 2012! They also announced that they would be releasing a new mini-album, amazing blue on August 8th and will be in addition to performing at a comeback event named “ANCAFESTA ’12 SUMMER DIVE”. n This will take place on Saturday and Sunday, September 8-9, 2012 at Kokuritsu Yoyogi Kyougijo (Yoyogi National Gymnasium) in Tokyo.

To top things off, on April 27, 2012 they announced the details for their world tour, titled "LIVE CAFE TOUR 2012 NYAPPY GO AROUND THE WORLD III ~TADAIMA o(≧∀≦)o OKAERI o(≧∀≦)o~, which will start in November! This tour includes dates throughout Europe and the UK. This shows, fairly clearly, that the band plans to go full throttle until, at the very least 2014—their 10th anniversary. Nyappy is back in action!
