1) What do you love about kodona?

I like that I don’t have to worry about flashing people or petticoat wedgies, haha. Jokes aside, I always liked fancy vests and pants are more convenient. Cute doesn’t suit my personality very well, so I prefer to be cool.

2) Any advice for those trying to get into kodona or perfect their kodona style?

For beginners, get the basics down first and don’t be afraid to ask for constructive criticism. Learn what flatters your body shape. It’s okay to mess up! Start small and work your way up.

For everyone else, don’t be afraid to try something new! Ouji is still not very well defined, so it leaves room for creativity. Developing your own style will come with time.

For me, when I see something new, usually high fashion, visual kei, or anime, I say “Hey how can I work that into ouji?” Sometimes I will draw it out, other times I will collage it out. Most of my coordination skill came from wasting hours on online dress up games. Then I look back at my old coords and think about what could be improved.

3) In your style timeline, how have you improved (did you experiment with other styles?) and what were your brightest moments?

Before J-fashion, I was just another t-shirt and jeans person. Visual kei was the first Japanese style I was exposed to in middle school. I really admire it, but it is too extreme for day to day wear. Through visual kei, I found out about lolita fashion through the band Versailles’s collaboration with Alice and the Pirates. After a year of wearing lolita, I noticed I didn’t wear it very often. Then I tried out aristocrat, but I couldn’t really think of any way to improve myself in that style, so I moved to ouji.

The brightest moment for me was meeting Alice and the Pirates designer Tomomi “Cathy” Nakamura and model Midori Fukasawa! I met them twice actually thanks to Anime Matsuri Convention. Since AatP is one of my favorite brands, naturally I was very excited. Tomomi designs some of the headwear and menswear and Midori makes a cute prince. I also got to meet Baby, the Stars Shine Bright designer Masumi Kano and model Misako Aoki, both who were very sweet. The second time they came, I was able to be one of the AatP models in their fashion show.

4) What sites do you recommend for starting a kodona wardrobe?

I compiled a giant list of where to buy and it’s still growing, so please visit my blog: http://buttcape.blogspot.com/

My blog is still very new, but I’m hoping it will help aspiring princes.

5) What does Japanese street fashion mean to you?

In basic terms, I think of Japanese street fashion is a web of unique styles. It starts with an individual. People will start saying “that is very cool, I would like to try it, too!” Now it’s a group. As the group continues to grow, brands and style icons can start emerging. Some styles fade, but at the same time, more are branching off. One reason I like Japanese street fashion is that it’s more about expression rather than functionality.

Baltimore, MD (May 15, 2013) The renowned composer will present the world premiere performance of her new project, “PIANO ME”, at Otakon. For this concert, the simple intimacy of one performer with one instrument will be enhanced by experimental live visuals that respond to her performance. To see a sample of that performance, you can see it on our website at http://www.otakon.com/.

While studying at Waseda University, Yoko Kanno made her first debut as a member of “Tetsu 100%” which was released from CBS Sony. After the group split up, she became a composer/arranger for commercials, animation, movies, games and TV series. Known as a great master of animation music, her best works include Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Cowboy Bepop, MACROSS Frontier, Genesis of Aquarion, and The Vision of Escaflowne. She has also written and produced songs for artists such as SMAP, May’n, YUKI, Miki Imai, Maaya Sakamoto, Kyoko Koizumi, Crystal Kay, T.M Revolution, Shione Yukawa, Chitose Hajime, YOSHIKA, ORIGA and more.

Her recent performances include in 2008 the “Galaxy Tour” for MACROSS Frontier as well as in 2009 for the “YOKO KANNO SEATBELTS / Chojiku Tanabata Sonic” event of which both were sold out almost immediately.

For the recently released movie Petal Dance which came out in April 2013, she wrote a piano soundtrack which she performs herself. The piano score will be released from her own label PIANO. In summer 2013, she plans to release a score of “Song of departure, which is A Cappella Arrangements for Male Voices.”

Otakon 2013 will be held August 9-11 at the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, MD.

ABOUT OTAKON AND OTAKORP, INC.: Now entering its twentieth year, Otakon is an annual celebration of Japanese and East Asian popular culture, and also one of the largest gatherings of fans in the United States. Otakon celebrates popular culture as a gateway to deeper understanding of Asian culture, and has grown along with the enthusiasm for anime, manga, video games, and music from the Far East. Since 1999, Otakon has been held in Baltimore, Maryland; currently, Otakon is one of Baltimore’s few large, city-wide events, drawing over 32,000 people for three days each year (for a paid attendance of over 89,000 turnstile attendees). Otakon is a membership based convention sponsored by Otakorp, Inc., a Pennsylvania-based, 501(c)3 educational non-profit whose mission is to promote the appreciation of Asian culture, primarily through its media and entertainment.

Hello, Michelle (Tenten) here with a brand new series, Visual Kei Essentials. I don’t know about you, but I constantly stumble upon products, services, or websites that seem like they might be a good thing, but I’m not sure. Well, I thought it might be nice to do a series of not just reviews, but also recommendations, so you, the reader, can make your next purchase with confidence and get the very best.

One of the main items I use on a daily basis, especially if I’m headed to a concert or dressing up in my own visual style, is make-up. For this reason I felt there was no better product to start my review with than Sugarpill Cosmetics. I’ve been a fan of their make-up for some time, so it’s nice to be able to pay homage to them.

For the purpose of this review and recommendation, I purchased four colors from their website. Three pressed; Bulletproof (a matte black), Love+ (a spectacular fiery red) and Poison Plum (a simply toxic purple), and one loose eyeshadow; Tiara (a silver packed with more sparkles than you can probably handle).

One nice thing was the quick ship time; I made my purchase on a Friday and received it on Monday. Definitely a perk in case you’ve got a concert or convention coming up. I also got a sample of Royal Sugar, which is this gorgeous blue loose shadow. I’m not normally a fan of loose shadows, but Sugarpill’s colors are just too amazing to pass up!

Here’s some swatches of what they look like dry and wet.

I absolutely love how Tiara looks when wet; almost like you’ve actually liquefied silver.

Tenten’s Tips: Use Bulletproof when it’s wet, for an amazing light-feeling eyeliner that lasts all day and won’t crack!

Tenten’s Tips: Make sure to use a base if you’re planning on using Poison Plum when wet otherwise it will stain your skin pink for quite some time.

All of Sugarpill’s products are so light and powerfully pigmented, enough so that you only need to use a little bit, ensuring you get the most out of your purchase. The only down-side is that after several hours or so of physical activities, I needed to do a little touch-up, especially with Love+. Here’s a look I put together using Love+, Poison Plum, and Bulletproof. The mascara is Maybelline’s The Colossal Volum’ Express. I use it since I really can’t wear falsies, due to my glasses. I love how Love+ just makes my eyes pop.

Tenten Tutorial: Here’s an every-day “goth” look that I’ve created with Poison Plum, Bulletproof, and a grayish silver from a L.A. Colors palette I got at 5 Below. This look is just a nice smokey-purple that is dark without being too overbearing. You can easily turn this into a night time look by simply exaggerating the wing-lining on the top lid.

Step 1: Cover your your lid and go into the crease with a light gray-silver as a base.
Step 2: Do the same but with Poison Plum, you can extend it a little bit past your lid to give the look a nice continuity for when you add the winged liner.
Step 3: Blend in a darker gray-silver than what you used for step 1. This does NOT have to be perfect, in fact it looks cooler if you blend it unevenly.
Step 4: Line the bottom of your eye , smudging it slighty.
Step 5: Line the top lid, making the wing as you’d like it. Add mascara or falsies, then clean it all up, and you’re done~!

Not only would I highly recommend the colors I purchased but I also highly recommend Tako (a white that puts paper to shame) as it’s a great highlighter or base for almost any look, such as a sugar skull, plus it works as a nice foundation powder mix for those with a pale complexion, like myself. The only other colors I’ve had the opportunity to use myself are Dollipop and Afterparty, both are great for cute Oshare looks, or just to add some color to any day. I definitely have my eye on some other colors I want to try out.

If you have any products or websites you’d like me to look into, please just comment below and I’ll be sure to check them out as soon as I can.

Make sure to visit Sugarpill’s website to purchase eyeshadows, lashes, and Sugarpill merch as well as find links to other tutorials

Make sure to like Sugarpill’s Facebook page to keep updated on any sales and view amazing looks by Sugarpill users.

For wigs, black and burgundy is the way to go (I love seeing gothic/classic lolitas with those hair colors). Atelier Pierrot’s style is quite elegant and certain colors would obviously clash against most of their items. Even though some of the wig choices may be sold out, Gothic Lolita Wigs carry clip-on hair pieces (Pixie Collection). Get creative with the various hair pieces from the Pixie Collection. If black and burgundy aren’t really your cup of tea, dark brown or certain shades of blonde will work to.

GOTCHAROCKA

First Full-Length Album from GOTCHAROCKA

Visual rock band GOTCHAROCKA have announced plans for their first full-length album, which is due to come out this summer. A definite release date has yet to be confirmed, but the album has been described as “exciting” and a “true GOTCHAROCKA rock feeling”.

Recording for the album started mid-last week as Jui and JUN have described in a number of blog posts on Ameba throughout this week.

Since support drummer Tero recently stopped activities with GOTCHAROCKA, SuG’s shinpei will take his place for the first three performances during Crazy Monsters ～4 Piece Place Tour 2013～ in May.

GOTCHAROCKA have also announced that they will distribute a single and a free “memorial” DVD to all attendees at their performance The First Anniversary ONE MAN LIVE, which will take place on August 18th at Shibuya O-EAST.

SPYAIR

SPYAIR to sing for upcoming ‘Gintama’ movie

It’s been decided that rock band SPYAIR will sing the theme song for anime film “Gekijouban Gintama Kanketsu-hen Yorozuya yo Eien nare” that is scheduled to open in theaters on July 6th.

As the band has sung the ending theme “Samurai Heart (Some Like It Hot!!)” in 2011, and opening theme “Sakura Mitsutsuki” in 2013 for its TV anime series, this will mark the third time for the band to provide the theme song for “Gintama” anime.

“Gekijouban Gintama Kanketsu-hen Yorozuya yo Eien nare“ is the second film since the previous one “Shinyaku Benizakura-hen” that was released about 3 years ago. It will be a completely new episode written by the original author Sorachi Hideaki as the concluding episode of the anime series. It is said that an unknown truth will be revealed in the movie.

SPYAIR’s leader MOMIKEN commented, “This is our third time (to sing for ‘Gintama’). And it’s for the movie! It’s the final one too! We have no choice but to take this great opportunity! We are working on it while giving it our all. Everyone, please look forward for the theme song as well!”

The title of the theme song, as well as its release date, have not been decided on at this moment.

If you were to ask around the visual kei community, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hadn’t heard of MIYAVI – and there’s a good reason for that. MIYAVI first entered the visual kei scene back in 1999 as the guitarist of Dué le Quartz, in 2002 he reemerged as a solo artist. Since that time, he’s been making a name for himself with a truly neo-visualistic style. With such hits as Pop is Dead, Jibun Kakumei, Señor Señora Señorita, Kekkonshiki no uta, and my personal favorite, Subarashikikana kono sekai, MIYAVI has created one hell of a legacy. A legacy that he continues with his newest song, Ahead of the Light.

“Ahead of the Light” starts off with Miyavi singing the line, “Get ahead of the light”. After this line, as per normal MIYAVI-songflow, he starts to play the guitar in a funky fresh style. It isn’t until 00:11 that things get a little out of the ordinary, for at this time a groovy electronic beat is thrown into the mix. Upon listening to this for the first time, I actually had to go and check to make sure I was still listening to MIYAVI. The intro continues until 00:26, when MIYAVI starts singing the first verse, which like the whole song is in English. While he does this very well, there are still some moments where the lyrics aren’t very discernible; luckily this doesn’t distract from the song at all.

The next big point in the song is shortly after the chorus, where there is a small instrumental break. These are always a highlight in MIYAVI’s works as he’s a genius with a guitar, and these sections are where he really shines. After this part MIYAVI jumps into the bridge, which is the same as it had been previously in the song; however the song slows down after this and loses the electronic beat for a bit, although in place there is a use of autotune. This phase only last for a few seconds; though truthfully I would have liked to have heard more, I think it really added so much to the song. The song starts to wind down at 3:55, with MIYAVI shouting “Yeah!” and afterwards just letting his fingers do the talking with some expert strumming, although unlike before the electronic beat continues until, disappointingly, the song comes to a close.

‘Ahead of the Light’ mixed MIYAVI’s usual acoustic guitar playing and slapping with some experimental electro; which is definitely not something you’d expect from this glamurai. He did it in a way that is both majorly exciting and creative it worked so well I can easily imagine myself dancing to this at a club. I recommend all fans of visual kei check this song out. It’s available on Amazon for an amazingly low price of $1.99, this gets you not just this song but the instrumental version as well. The entire single gets a 9 out of 10, as well as a hope of seeing this being performed live sometime soon.
